At the R&D organization of a leading pharmaceutical company, we participated in the testing of a digital platform that ensures transparent, traceable processes—from compound registration and the planning of multi-step laboratory experiments to supporting research decisions.

The Challenge

Our client is a global pharmaceutical company that manages large volumes of compounds, laboratory tests, and research results as part of its research and development activities. In the early stages of the research process, it is particularly important to track various compounds, link experimental results, and transparently document decision-making processes.

The project involved two interdependent internal applications. The first system supported the registration of chemical compounds and molecules, while the second application facilitated the planning, coordination, and tracking of research and laboratory processes related to these compounds.

A particular challenge for testing was that the system operated with complex, state-dependent business logic. The outcome of each test process was influenced by previous experiments, laboratory results, progression rules, and integrations. In addition, the system linked research activities taking place at multiple geographic locations, making the reliable validation of various processes and data connections of critical importance.

The Solution

DSS Consulting’s experts were involved in the quality assurance and testing of the applications throughout the entire development process.

Testing was not limited to checking user interfaces. During the investigation of errors, we also examined the system’s operation at the database, API, and application log levels, allowing us to identify the causes of potential problems more quickly and accurately.

Throughout the project, we paid particular attention to verifying the proper functioning of research workflows, including:

the registration and data management of compounds,

  • the configuration of multi-step experimental processes,
  • the processing of laboratory results,
  • the validation of rule-based progression logic,
  • and the verification of data connections between applications.

The project’s findings also highlighted that one of the keys to successful automated testing is ensuring a properly controlled test environment and test data. For highly state-dependent research processes, reproducible testing requires a stable environment and a well-managed test data strategy.

The Result

The project contributed to the operation of a digital research platform that integrates registered compounds, laboratory tests, measurement results, and rules supporting research decisions into a unified system.

Through testing activities, it became possible to ensure the reliable operation of complex business processes and the early identification of risks associated with development. One of the most important lessons learned from the project was that, in the case of systems supporting pharmaceutical research and development, successful quality assurance requires not only technological expertise but also significant business and process knowledge.
