The Challenge
Our client is one of Europe’s leading insurance companies and one of Hungary’s top insurers.
The Hungarian National Bank’s Recommendation 8/2020 (VI. 22.) requires financial institutions to use anonymized data in testing, analysis and development environments — compliance with this is mandatory for our customer as well. They selected DSS Consulting for this task thanks to DSS’s proprietary data anonymization solution and decades of experience in the field.
A key task of the project was the automated detection of personal data in databases, and compliance with strict internal data security and IT security policies was a requirement.
The Solution
The project was preceded by a two-month pilot phase, during which the client conducted a comprehensive assessment of its data assets (at the level of the relevant systems, databases, data tables, and fields).
At the start of the project, DSS Data Anonym’s data recognition module systematically scanned the databases, then identified and collected the database tables and columns containing personal data. Following user validation, the DSS performed data anonymization on these fields containing personal data, using custom parameters tailored to the client’s systems and processes.
The biggest challenge during the project was coordinating the client’s complex, diverse, and particularly large-scale systems. In addition, errors in the databases also complicated the task—this was successfully eliminated using Data Anonym’s scalable fault-tolerance feature.
Technology
DSS Data Anonym, Java, Oracle, AS400
The Result
Following the pilot phase, our team of 12 successfully anonymized the entire customer database – which contained 40 million records and 150 data tables – on schedule and to our client’s complete satisfaction.
Our client’s department head put it this way: “We were looking for a solution that could achieve consistent anonymization across multiple systems, while fully integrating with our previously automated test environment maintenance processes. It was important that the software should provide sophisticated anonymization solutions for the most common data types in Hungary (e.g. social security number, bank account number, tax number, address, etc.) and that these should be extensible. The software met the expectations excellently, with the DSS team of experts delivering all the planned milestones of the project on time.”
Following the completion of the project, we provide ongoing support and maintenance services.
