A Digital Solution for Aircraft Maintenance

We transformed a manual aircraft maintenance process into a digital, globally deployed system – reducing operational friction and improving compliance readiness across multiple continents.

The Challenge

Our customer is a major MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) company providing services for aircraft, engines and components. Headquartered in Europe, it has several major base maintenance facilities across Europe, North America and Asia.

A single maintenance operation consists of hundreds of individual tasks, to be performed, recorded and reported in a precise sequence, by licensed maintenance personnel.

The customer had a well-established methodology for managing maintenance tasks, including progress, safety, and security tracking, but this required the manual transfer of data from other systems (such as SAP). This methodology clearly resulted in a slow flow of information and was prone to human error.

The customer wanted to migrate the entire methodology to a digital platform while leveraging the capabilities of digital technology, such as real-time data streams, data visualization in various formats, data display at different levels of detail, and role-based data access.

They were looking for a digital transformation partner who could truly digitalize the methodology, understand the domain, and help them achieve the benefits of digital transformation. In addition, they needed a reliable, predictable partner who approached the project with the necessary flexibility and maintained transparent communication.

The Solution

As the first step, DSS Consulting understood the requirements in detail (required technologies, methodology, etc.) and acquired the necessary domain knowledge, Then, DSS set up the project team, which included three experts from the customer’s side (including a Scrum Master and a Product Owner) as well as a project manager, a business analyst and several developers and testers from DSS.

Custom development was conducted using the Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE), Angular and RxJS technologies and the Scrum methodology. The project progressed as planned: DSS presented the first version of the solution to the customer 4 months after project kickoff, and in another 4 months the final version was finalized and approved.

It was a challenge to convince employees who had previously used the old manual system to switch to the new digital solution. However, by tailoring the system to their real-world needs and through a phased rollout and additional training, we were able to get them on board.

The Result

We completed the project on time and at our client’s satisfaction. The software was first implemented at a major base maintenance facility in Europe and was subsequently rolled out to all their maintenance facilities globally. Satisfied with the quick team setup and the successful project work, the customer has since entrusted DSS with another custom software development project.
